about

In October of 2021, I was privileged enough to acquire a tremendous lot of predominantly Caribbean records in Mission, B.C.. This lot of 45s blindsided me, especially as I'm neither typically versed in the format or the genre. Hundreds upon hundreds of the cleanest reggae records you've ever seen, many stamped with the name 'Fred Wilson' of New Westminster, B.C.

Before finding this collection, my interest in Reggae music from Jamaica was largely limited to the recent repress-circuit (like Noel Ellis) or the roots of Dub/Minimal Techno (like Wackies-label LPs and early Digital Dancehall). Before this collection, I'd yet to invest a whole lot of time in 70s Reggae, in part due to a skepticism relating to its comparatively bland sound. A narrative that should be familiar to 78 collectors also applies here: The most marketable Reggae music in the 70s were directly incorporating Rock and Pop influences, which led to a broader distribution amongst non-Caribbean communities at the time. The deep, dark roots cuts, the heavy funk influences and the abstract performances obviously weren't marketable to the same magnitude and thus, the best Reggae songs usually never made it to LP.

I aimed to curate the compilation with the intent of covering a wide variety of reggae sounds, which was made easy by the ridiculous range this collection covered. All the digitizations are raw transfers, limited only to 45s that were in this collection. No noise reduction has been applied, and only a rudimentary ReplayGain normalization method was used to equalize the volume between songs. The rest was simply done by the generally immaculate condition of the records.

Everything I have learned about true Roots Reggae essentially came from this collection. The privilege to experience such a high calibre of music, both in terms of quality and record condition, was simply too special and unique to not create a selector compilation.

The album artwork was inspired by Earthbound for the SNES.
